Design Concept
This collection began with a single sketch.
One day, I drew a tulip—its petals unfurled and its stem standing straight. Yet, the image felt too "well-behaved." I casually added a pearl beside the flower and sketched a few lines onto it—suddenly, the outline of a skull emerged next to the bloom. In that moment, the composition gained a compelling tension: a delicate, graceful flower standing alongside a sharp-edged, angular skull.
This was not the first time tulips and skulls had met in the history of jewelry. Classic 17th-century artworks often featured young figures holding both a tulip and a skull—symbolizing the coexistence of beauty and transience, of blooming life and eternity. Our goal was to distill this timeless dialogue into a pair of earrings suitable for everyday wear.
However, transforming this sketch into a tangible piece of jewelry presented a practical challenge: how could we make the tulip, the skull-carved pearl, and the earring back distinct yet seamlessly integrated?
We broke the design down into three components to refine them:
